ROG.e discusses the just energy transition and the diversity of the Brazilian grid
At the opening session of one of the leading events in the sector, on Monday (23) in Rio de Janeiro, leaders have highlighted Brazil’s strategic position in the global energy landscape
ROG.e 2024 kicked off on Monday (23) showing the world that coexistence between different energy sources is a strategic path towards a just and sustainable energy transition. The IBP president, Roberto Ardenghy, praised ROG.e as a journey of knowledge, information exchange and deal-making, showing how the oil and gas and energy sector is committed to decarbonizing the economy.
“More than a quarter of the technical papers presented focus on decarbonization, sustainability, diversity and inclusion issues. We are important players in the process of energy evolution, which includes security, availability, plurality and inclusion.”
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, highlighted the plurality of the Brazilian energy grid and the importance of the oil and gas sector for energy security and economic development. “Brazil is a world example with its diverse grid, we are examples in hydroelectricity, wind, solar, a storehouse of clean energies. In addition, our oil and gas industry is thriving and plural. We are recovering fields that were in decline and that’s why today we launched Potencializa E&P, to strengthen mature fields, generating jobs and income.”
Magda Chambriard, president of Petrobras, stressed the importance of exploration and production activities for replenishing reserves, as well as Brazil’s leading role in the energy transition process. “We are going to discuss oil projects safely and responsibly, to replenish reserves, working on the possibility of producing oil and gas off the coast of Amapá. Another important point is that, while the world aspires to reach 39% of the energy grid renewable by 2050, Brazil has already reached this goal and now aspires to reach 64%,” she said.
OPEC Secretary-General, Haitham Al-Ghais, also praised Brazil’s position at the forefront of the clean energy grid and confirmed the organization’s commitment to diversifying sources and energy security. “IBP’s work is vital for the advancement of the sector not only in Brazil but globally. OPEC supports all energy sources in a context that requires an understanding of three key points: energy security, fair accessibility and emission reduction.”
ANP General Director, Rodolfo Saboia, pointed out the strategic importance of the Brazilian oil and gas industry for the country and its importance in the energy transition process. “At COP 28 it was mentioned that the transition must take place in an organized way, coexisting with the different varieties of energy sources around the world. In this context, the country has a strategic position because it is a powerhouse that supplies different sources of energy.”
One example of investment in new energy sources is TotalEnergies. The company’s CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, stressed that the company’s mission is to produce more energy with fewer emissions. “We want to grow in the market for gas, electricity and other energy sources. We work with Petrobras to produce oil and gas, reducing carbon emissions with each project. As a clean and renewable source, wind energy is becoming an ally in reducing emissions and combating climate change,” said the executive at the Strategic Talks.
Non-obvious thinking
In his speech delivered to ROG.e delegates, Indian bestselling author and marketing strategist Rohit Bhargava pointed out that we are living in a multitasking world and that people get distracted very easily. “This is a big problem since it is ingrained in this generation and we need to find solutions to solve this deficit that can impact our knowledge of the present and the future,” said Bhargava, known for innovative ideas about the future of business and technology and author of the successful “Non-Obvious: How to Think Different, Curate Ideas & Predict the Future”.

At the opening session of iUP Innovation Connections, a parallel event to ROG.e 2024, Maiza Pimenta Goulart, executive manager of the Petrobras Research Centre (CENPES), stressed the importance of the innovation ecosystem within the company, an area that will receive investments of BRL 3.6 billion in R&D, with projects that include decarbonization solutions and new energies.
The Petrobras manager also pointed out that, since 2019, the institution has been carrying out “Connections for Innovation”, a program that looks for solutions in the market for the corporation’s biggest challenges, through its Startups modules. Since then, contracts worth BRL 1.8 billion have been signed.
More than 1,000 people attended the opening of ROG.e alone, one of the world’s leading energy events, organized by the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP), which will welcome more than 70,000 participants until Thursday (26) at the Olympic Boulevard in Rio de Janeiro.
