Presentation
Discover IGRC 2017 and get ready to debate the future of natural gas industry with leaders from around the globe!
One of the most important technical events in the natural gas industry, the International Gas Union Research Conference (IGRC) will arrive in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in May 2017. Organized by IBP – Brazilian Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Institute, in partnership with International Gas Union (IGU), the Conference is an itinerant event promoted every three years in a different country.
The 2017 edition has as theme “Natural Gas: Catalysing the Future”, which will bring technology as strategic key to the future business model for gas growth. The conference will map out all technological trends, as one of the fundamental pillars for the industry development.
IGRC 2017 will gather business leaders across all areas of natural gas sector to debate the most relevant topics in discussion at the national and international scenario.
The event will also bring together specialists to present technical papers, which will propose solutions to confront the challenges to the development of natural gas sector and to potentialize business opportunities. The conference topics include several segments as production & exploration, gas transmission & distribution, industrial gas utilization, climate and environment, and others.

Context
Natural gas as the fuel of the future: how would companies get prepared to it?
What is the impact of current structural changes of oil and gas industry to gas operations? How technology can contribute to reduce costs and bring competitiveness to companies? In what way can the initiatives in Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) contribute to the industry’s sustainability in a renewed market context? Moreover, the most important: how can natural gas be reinvented, becoming the power that would be the fuel of future in all societies?
The theme “Natural Gas: Catalysing the Future” was chosen to reinforce that, more than just answers, the 2017 edition of IGRC will provide a deep reflection about the future of gas industry in a brand new scenario, in which companies all over the world need to redefine models, methods, products and more: ideologies and values.
If the demand for emerging technologies became a rule in all industries in the past years, nowadays it would be a key to find solutions to overcome the panel of decreasing prices and to deal with demanding consumers.
In Brazil, the discussion is crossing lines, integrating several topics in the production, exploration, transportation, among others relevant items in the gas segment. As an example, the prices of oil barrels had turned down in the last year, forcing companies to restructure their perspectives to future.
In addition, if on one hand pre salt is drafting opportunities and becoming a new exploration frontier – not only to oil reserves but also to natural gas, on the other hand it is imposing technological challenges as the high contamination rates by carbon in many fields across the country.
Altogether, Brazilian and foreign markets are searching for solutions to set out critic questions to the global society such as environmentally friendly energy supplies and gas as a complementary energy to the renewable ones.
In a defying period that are compelling companies to rebuilt strategies that were planned ahead, a refreshed point of view is emerging in our industry: gas as a transition fuel to support a low-carbon economy. It would be a catalysing element to the transformed demands in the energy sector – not only because of economic paradigms but also because of the increasing demand for renewable energy sources.
New challenges are coming up in energy industry and natural gas shows itself as a solution to overcome emerging barriers, turning the future tangible and more defying than it ever was.

2014 Edition
Under the theme Gas Innovations Inspiring Clean Energy, IGRC 2014 took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. During three days, researchers from all over the world discussed the main technical points from natural gas industry. Check some highlights.
GAS INNOVATIONS INSPIRING CLEAN ENERGY
Under this theme an extensive technical conference programme was offered to delegates who participated in parallel oral, workshop and poster sessions. Plenary sessions covered several subjects about innovative changes on the gas sector, business cases on Research & Development (R&D), essential and new technologies for the segment, among other important global messages on gas segment. The programme also covered gas utilisation, gas transmission and distribution, gas production as well as cross-cutting topics such as environment, safety, communication, markets, supply, strategy and HR.
TECHNICAL TOURS
IGRC 2014 also promoted integrating technical tours focused on networking and debating technical issues. The visits included destinies such as Avedore Power Station, considered one of the top ones in the world, the Klovermarken Gasworks, which uses natural gas, biogas and air to produce towngas to the city of Copenhagen, and to Gl. Holtegaard, an art gallery that uses a heating system consisting of a stand-alone ground-source gas-fired heat pump for heating the indoor areas.
